The rectangular ‘white box’ with controlled natural and artificial light, suspended in space and time for the undisturbed contemplation o f the art displayed, is the preferred ideal for a gallery with frequently changing exhibitions. “WHERE WE BE?” exploits Hartell Gallery’s unique orientation and pivotal location within AAP, the Cornell campus and its broader context to propose an expanded awareness off the relationship between the architecture of the gallery, the things exhibited within it and the world outside. The “exhibition” juxtaposes two recent projects by LUCITO (Andrew Lucia and Iroha Ito), and several projects exhibited over some 45 years in Hartell by Studio_Z (John Zissovici). It also gathers around the gallery’s pivoting wall a new collaborative ‘site specific’ construction that highlights the shared interests of the two practices. The pivoting wall, designated as a “temporary installation” designed and built by Zissovici and his team, was not included in the construction documents for Studio_Z ‘s 2000 renovation of Hartell Gallery. It has remained there for almost a quarter century as an integral part of the gallery providing flexibility and much needed additional surface for exhibitions. Yet it is always also still an INSTALLATION, an invisible super-object. LUCITO returns portions of the 2nd and 3rd floors to the original grandeur of the residence, while recognizing the idiosyncrasies of the house and characteristics that have become a part of its rich history. Through research and observation of the existing structure, LUCITO identifies and celebrates the existing characteristics of the house deemed important to the owner, while working with them to design new architectural features as they impart their legacy on this magnificent home. On a bright day in Lower Manhattan, a temporary spectacle is created through the masking of the sun’s rays, casting a shadow below by means of an artificial eclipse.&nbsp; Whether knowingly or simply caught up in the spectacle as it unfolds, pedestrians on the streets find themselves as participants in this symbolic act of quiet erasure.&nbsp; Out of curiosity, workers suspend their routines and pour out of their offices becoming unwitting members of the audience while creating a secondary spectacle in the streets.&nbsp;What is causing this anomalous event?&nbsp; An enormous opaque scrim is suspended by drone-guided weather balloons and tethered to moving barges in New York Harbor around the Southern tip of Manhattan.&nbsp; The scrim’s course is precisely calculated and charted according to wind patterns and the sun’s path. Lower Manhattan is chosen as a site for which the shadow is cast. Today this area stands simultaneously as an emblem of freedom, the American Dream, and unrelenting capitalism.&nbsp; But, who’s freedom, who’s dream and to what end?&nbsp; Whether perceived or not, as a compression of history the brutal events and global impact of this locale span from well before New Amsterdam was self-declared on February 2nd, 1653 to the events of September 11th, 2001, through to today and beyond. Beware of the spit jack that is kept locked away, for hospitality a stranger will not find. Yet dreams of homesteading for dear Fannie and Freddie are hardly complete. Their arrangement, though clandestine it may be, abounds with endless opportunities built on a taconite dowry. Heaven forbids one to question its ethics, and so it goes on making ingots from ashes. As black bears bark toward smoking towers, keep the dice rolling and do not forget to go shopping.  This tale, part of an ongoing work-in-progress, is an interpretation of themes underlying the original works suggestive of the title. A Rake’s Progress is a series of 18th Century paintings and etchings consisting of eight plates by the English artist William Hogarth. In his satirical moral allegory, the rise and fall of the life of the spendthrift Tom Rakewell is depicted, starting from Tom’s effortless acquisition of a great family fortune, through living his new life lavishly, to finally settling in Bedlam, the ‘madhouse’. Throughout his journey, Tom lives in abandonment and forgoes life’s lessons and forgiveness. LUCITO’s version presents a series of aerial satellite images of the American landscape. Each scene is curiously looked upon by a monolithic specter whose presence is revealed only through a cast shadow which bears witness to events below. The specific scenes correlate to subject matter within the original. Although portrayed in a non-consecutive historical manner, cues to these leitmotifs linger throughout the imagery and accompanying captions depicting principles, events, and entities of America. In this retelling, historical narrative and ongoing events fuse while opening the way to a projective fiction that corresponds to the unfinished Plates VII, Prison and VIII, Bedlam.&nbsp; History folds within itself while producing an endless loop of inevitable fate. By opening the plan, the new kitchen becomes a spacious gathering and dining area while extending the first floor visually to the backyard gardens. A new central stair core leads upwards to the library and office while simplifying the existing circulation plan and allowing ease of flow between the study and the newly renovated and expanded owner’s suite.&nbsp;
